It is very important to note that the Chinese are not interested in the quick fix when it comes to sexuality. They are interested in building true sexual vitality, and that is the raison d'être for the sexual tonics. Tonics, by definition, are herbal substances that optimize human functioning, improve health, increase longevity, retard aging, are safe even when taken over a long period of time, and have beneficial effects on the psyche. The sexual tonics that come from China meet those qualifications and more.

The herbs are not drugs that alter consciousness like illicit drugs common in the West. But they do relax the body, and enable one's feelings to expand. They do strengthen the male genitalia and enhance female sensitivity and response. But, it must be emphasized that Chinese sexual tonics are first and foremost designed to improve health.


How the Sexual Tonics Work

Sexual tonics and the sexual yogas (Daoist yoga and Tantric yoga) are rooted in this premise that the Jing can be preserved and even increased. Jing has a direct relationship with reproduction, and thus with sexuality. Jing is regarded as being the root of our existence and is the root of the existence of the species as well. Strong Jing will generate strong sexual function, while a deficiency of Jing will result in a weakening of the sexual functions and in the weakening of the body and mind, leading eventually to aging and to death. Thus sexuality and longevity are intimately connected from the Chinese philosophical point of view and in the Chinese way of life. In the Chinese view, it is the goal of all healthful activities to preserve the Original Jing, to replace the Jing that is spent, and to increase the Jing that is stored within the body whenever possible. That is the secret to longevity and to radiant health.

In Chinese herbalism, there are a relatively small number of Jing tonics, some of which are considered to be Yang and some of which are considered to be Yin. The Yang herbs stimulate the Yang functions of a human being and the Yin herbs encourage the Yin functions. A Yang Jing tonifying herb will cause a man or woman to become more active, more assertive or even aggressive, warmer and more expressive. In addition, the same herbs will cause a man or woman to be more sexually driven and more easily stimulated. A Yin Jing tonic herb will build up hormones, increase sexual fluids in women and increase sperm production in men. A combination of Yin and Yang herbs will both increase longevity and provide very strong sexual energy.

Both Yin and Yang are necessary. Yang herbs are useless if the reserves of Yin are depleted. Unfortunately, stress, lack of sleep, overwork, poor diet, chronic or acute illness and even excessive sexual activity (that is, activity beyond a person’s current capacity) can all result in the depletion of Yin and Yang Jing. Therefore, in building sexual energy in its true sense, one should attempt to regulate one's life so that the causes of Yin and Yang Jing deficiency are eliminated.

In Chinese sexual herbalism, Yang herbs are generally not taken unless Yin herbs are taken also. This prevents the hot, stimulating Yang herbs from overdriving the system and burning out the Yin reserves, which are of course required for life itself. But some Yin herbs can be used alone, although these are generally not as immediately strengthening as a combination of Yin and Yang herbs.


The Major Sexual Tonic Herbs

Schizandra is regarded as an excellent Yin tonic that builds energy in the sexual organs, vastly increasing potency. Schizandra helps to prevent male premature ejaculation. Thus, Schizandra increases sexual endurance allowing a man to engage in intercourse for a much longer time, once he has developed the physical and mental endurance.

Women also are said to benefit greatly from consuming Schizandra. Schizandra is said to increase sexual sensitivity in women and to intensify orgasm. It is considered to be one of the premium women's aphrodisiacs. It is said that after a woman has used Schizandra for one hundred days, she will build up an abundance of sexual fluids. These fluids are stored in the vaginal tissue until sexual excitement causes them to be released. At that time, their is a continuous flow that can continue for an extended period of time. This obviously enhances sexuality and allows her, and her man, to continue for a much longer time (if he has the endurance to stay with her).

Lycium is a major sexual tonic for both men and women and is routinely combined with Yang herbs in a multitude of formulas used in China. It provides the energy for sex and itself has rejuvenating qualities.

Polygonum is believed to increase male potency and female fertility. Many men report that consumption of this herb noticeably increases sperm production and sexual vigor.

Cornus tonifies the Kidney and Liver and prevents the leakage of sperm. It is considered to be a powerful aphrodisiac. It generates sexual energy, but prevents leakage of Yin Jing. It is thus the perfect sex tonic herb.

Ginseng root is highly prized for its tonic action on the sexual function. Ginseng, which literally translated means "man root," enhances both the stimulatory and inhibitory process of the central nervous system, thus improving the adaptability of the nervous responses. It has also been found to increase the production of sex-related hormones and to increase sexual response when consumed in moderate doses. Also, Ginseng has been found to have profound anti-fatigue effects and to increase physical stamina. All of these factors make Ginseng one of the most important tonic herbs used in Chinese sexual therapy and Chinese aphrodisiacs.

Deer Antler is perhaps the quintessential sexual tonic. An ancient Chinese classic on the sexual arts states that "there is nothing better than Deer Antler to cause a man to be robust and unaffected by age, not to tire in the bedroom, and not to deteriorate either in energy or in facial coloration." Deer Antler is a common component of many traditional, and often expensive, elixirs. It is a major ingredient in Supreme Creation. Though it is said to be strengthening to the body as a whole, it remarkable rejuvenating and invigorating effects on the sexual functions is legendary in China. Epimedium, known as "Passionate Goat Herb" in China, increases sexual desire, increases sperm production and stimulates sensory nerves. The herb has been found to have a moderate androgen-like effect on the testes and prostate. Epimedium reduces blood pressure. It is used in women’s tonics as well to increase sex drive.

Cistanche is another important sex tonic that has been used by men throughout Chinese history. Ancient sexual classics claimed that consistent consumption of Cistanche would enlarge the penis. It is also said to make the penis much harder during erection. Cistanche is now known to contain alkaloids that increase blood circulation to the pelvic region in general and to the genitals in particular.

Cnidium Seed, which is in fact Chinese parsley seed, is a sexual stimulant that takes effect very quickly, although not so powerfully as to be overwhelming or uncomfortable. It increases blood circulation to the genital organs and acts as a general catalyst in sexual tonics. Continued intake of Cnidium is believed by the Chinese to make a man extremely potent.

Polygala is used in sexual tonics because it is believed to increase a man’s immediate response to female stimulation, while preventing premature leakage of a man’s semen. It strengthens the muscles of the back and loins so as to prevent tiring from the exertion and contortions of sexual engagement.

Ant is widely used in the Orient to increase sexual desire and to improve sexual function. Ant improves liver functions that can influence sexual functions. Ants are extremely rich in zinc, which has a direct influence on sexual function. Sexual Tonic Formulations

Many formulations have been developed over the centuries that have stood the test of time. These herbal formulations are all safe when used according to standard procedures and with common sense. In fact, they are extremely beneficial. The herbs and formulations are tonics, not medicine or drugs.
